چکیده

Cosar and Julou (1959) studied this preparation in vitro and in vivo in the mouse and demonstrated very high activity against Trichomonas vaginalis. Their tests showed a low incidence of acute toxicity in mice and no evidence of chronic toxicity when they gave the drug by mouth to rats in amounts of up to 50 mg./kg. daily for one month and to dogs in amounts of up to 100 mg./kg. daily for the same period. The first clinical trials were those reported by Durel, Roiron, Siboulet, and Borel (1959), who gave Flagyl by mouth to a small number of men suffering from trichomonal urethritis, with excellent results. They also treated women suffering from trichomonal vaginitis, but most of them received concurrent local treatment with pessaries of Flagyl. The results with this combined treatment were again excellent. They found no response to the remedy in cases of urethritis or vaginitis in which Trichomonas vaginalis was not demonstrated. Confirmation of this work was given by Sylvestre, Gallai, and Ethier (1959) and again by Durel, Roiron, Siboulet, and Borel (1960). The latter made very modest claims for the drug used systemically in the treatment of females, suggesting that it was no more than a useful adjunct to local treatment but calling for further investigation of exclusively oral treatment.

Nifuratel (Magmilor) in trichomonal vaginitis.

Introduced almost a decade ago, Flagyl (Metronidazole) is still the only acceptable systemic therapy available for trichomoniasis. Fortunately, the efficacy of Flagyl has remained at a very high level and there is no evidence that Trichomonas vaginalis has developed, or is developing, any resistance to it. However, there has always been the occasional case in which even very large doses of Flag...

Two-day treatment of trichomoniasis in the female--a comparison of metronidazole and nimorazole.

A comparison has been made of the efficiency of a 2-day course of metronidazole (Flagyl) with that of a similar course of nimorazole (Naxogin) in the treatment of trichomoniasis. Of the 105 consecutive patients treated, 72 were finally included in the study (38 on metronidazole and 34 on nimorazole). Follow-up tests indicated an overall cure rate of 84-3 per cent. in those given Flagyl and 85-3...

Treatment of trichomoniasis in the female with a 5-day course of metronidazole (Flagyl).

Over a period of 10 years very satisfactory results have been obtained in the treatment of trichomoniasis in women with a 7-day course of 'Flagyl' at a dosage of 200 mg. three times a day, without any concomitant local therapy (Rodin, King, Nicol, and Barrow 1960). In view of the known unreliability of patients in following any dosage schedule, it was felt that a simpler and shorter regimen wou...

An imidazole derivative (flagyl) effective orally in vaginal trichomoniasis.

The very large number of chemical, antibiotic, hormonal, and other substances prepared as powders, creams, ointments, and solutions and applied by various means in the local treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis is a striking testimony to the general ineffectiveness of them all. Recurrence rates of 30-50 per cent. after the ensuing menstrual period are commonplace. Such recurrences are considered...

Nitrimidazine compared with metronidazole in the treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis.

A new substituted nitroimidazole, nitrimidazine (Naxogin), is compared with the established drug, metronidazole (Flagyl), for the treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis in a randomized double-blind trial. Nitrimidazine cured 39 (68%) out of 57 patients and showed no undesirable effects other than nausea in one patient. Metronidazole cured 51 (89%) out of 57 patients and also caused nausea in one p...
